My Mum - A Trip Down Memory Lane & Old Photos
69
I’ve just spent a wonderful afternoon with my Mum looking at old photos.
She has shown me photos I’ve never seen before and I’ve learnt a lot about my family, some I knew and some I’d never met. I didn’t realise how little I knew about them.
What prompted this trip down memory lane? My quest for research and information for my latest hub! I seem to be on a non-stop mission these days collating ‘my bits’ in readiness to put pen to paper! I had no idea when I joined hubpages just how rewarding and satisfying this would turn out to be!
The perfect example of this, was my afternoon reminiscing with Mum, I didn’t realise how little I knew about my grandparents, but more surprising was the fun hearing about little ‘tit-bits’ from Mum.
I asked Mum a few weeks back if she’d any old photo booth photos that I could use in a hub I was writing.
It took a while, but Mum eventually said she’d found some - so I popped round to pick them up.
What a fabulous photo, it was just what I was looking for, it totally epitomized the ‘fun’ of instant photography in the 1960-70’s!
Mum obviously hadn’t seen the photo for years, so was a great ‘find’ for her too!
She’d found it amongst the hundreds of old photos that were tucked away in the attic.
The photo is my Mum and her Sister (my Auntie) on a day trip to the seaside, Mum said it felt like it was taken just ‘yesterday’ (it was in fact about 50 years ago).
She said they’d bought the toffee apples especially, because they thought it would be fun biting into the apples as the photos were taken. She could even remember the jacket she was wearing it was yellow and she’d knitted it herself!
There was of course, the traditional strip of 4, they were cut in half and had two each!
I scanned and restored the photo and gave Mum and my Auntie a new 7x5 inch framed copy!
Hunting through the photos Mum found some real treasures, including this one of my Great-Grandad who I’d never met.
This photo was taken in about 1930 and is my Grandad holding my Dad with my Great-Grandad.
He was apparently a ‘Cobbler’ by trade and not only repaired shoes, he made them. I had no idea about this and found all Mum was telling me fascinating.
She then actually produced a small childs shoe that Great Grandad had made over 80 years ago! I took some photos of it, I thought it was beautiful, the stitching and everything about it looks so perfect.
There was a huge amount of pleasure and satisfaction in scanning and restoring this photo.
I can definitely recommend encouraging your parents or grandparents to take a trip down memory lane, do it with a box of old photos, you may be surprised what you find out!

What a fabulous hub. I love the pictures of your Mom and Auntie. They were all smiles so you knew they were having fun. I also liked how you learned more about your relatives. Your Great Grandad being a cobbler and making shoes thats amazing. This was well written and such a pleasure to read.
Great, great hub! Your Mum and Auntie looked like they were having a good time. Excellent restoration of some beautiful photos!
Loving your memory lane. It reminds me so much of the place I grew up in. Beautiful photographs!
Thanks for sharing your article and photos. Nice memory lane.
..what lovely memories you have shared here with your lucky readers ...you know, my mum was my best friend and we shared a secret garden together before she passed away back in 2004 - better to have loved than not to have loved at all ....... and I certainly love your hubs and appreciation of nature, family and all things beautiful!!!!
This is a great story MM! It's so cool to see those old photos and those shoes, wow! You know more about your family history and the photos add that much more.
Movie Master,

Voted UP & UAB-- have a good evening, mar!
Voted up ,awesome and beautiful! Myself and my mother have done this many times , remeniscing of past joyous occasions , and some not so much . i think it builds our bond together stronger . this is a wonderful hub , thank you for sharing :)
I spent many hours with my dear mother when she was alive doing the same thing. Thankfully working together we got most of the old photos put into photo albums and labeled. Learn as much from your "Mum" while you can and treasure the time spent together. It is really special! Wonderful hub...voted up.
Wow! This was so cool. I came here through your daughter's Hubber to Hubber featured interview in today's Hub Pages Weekly. In the interview, "Cloverleaf" mentioned that this was her favorite hub and that she, too, had learned a lot about the family's history while reading it.
The photos are so cool and I particularly love the detailed work on the child's shoe that your Great Grandad had done over 80 years ago!
Thanks so much for sharing this.
Voted up across the board (included funny because this is such a delightful read and the photo booth strip was done to be intentionally cute and fun).
Oh MM, such great times and memories for you and your mum. That picture of yours looks very good now since the retouch. 1930, so his dad would have been dorn 1870s, or near perhaps. Just saying, that is a lot of history and a very great story. I really enjoyed this. Voted up, awe, beaut.
What a wonderful hub sharing your lovely memories. I loved looking at your beautiful mum and auntie goofing around in the pictures. They seem to have a good time together.
Lesley, thank you for a enjoyable read and wonderful photos. Voted up, beautiful and sharing.
